Why a token's pool age predicts risk better than its price

Most catastrophic token failures happen within hours of the pool being created. Pair age is the cheapest risk signal available and the one most often ignored.

Does a token's age matter?

Pair age is simply how long a token's trading pool has existed. It is recorded on-chain at creation and cannot be faked or backdated.

It is also, for a class of failure that matters enormously, the single most predictive number available — and unlike most risk signals it requires no interpretation at all.

Why it matters

The base rate is the argument. Rug pulls, abandoned launches and pools drained within hours of creation are concentrated overwhelmingly in the first day of a pair's life. A pool that has traded for three months has survived the window in which most failures occur.

A new pair also has no history to assess. Every other risk measure — depth trends, holder distribution, whether volume is real — needs time to mean anything. On a two-hour-old pool there is nothing to look at.

There is a specific data trap here worth knowing. Aggregators report a 24-hour price change for pools younger than 24 hours, computed from whatever history exists. On a three-hour-old pool the 24-hour figure is not a 24-hour figure. Sites that republish it without checking pair age are publishing a number that does not mean what it says.

How to check it yourself

• Pair creation time is shown by most DEX aggregators, often as 'pair created' or 'age'. It is on-chain data, so every source should agree.
• Treat anything under 24 hours as unassessable rather than risky-but-measurable. The information needed to judge it does not exist yet.
